Workpackage 1: Data, Information to Knowledge

Workpackage leader: UG-RCMG

The vast majority of data, information and knowledge on geological resources are already available in a digital format. Relevant data will now be integrated and harmonized. UG-RCMG, TNO and RBINS are renowned for their expertise on Tertiary and Quaternary deposits in the southern Bight of the North Sea (e.g. Le Bot et al. 2003, 2005; Mathys 2009; Rijsdijk et al. 2005), and the Belgian partners in particular have a strong track record in monitoring and modelling sediment, hydro- and morphodynamics (e.g. Van Lancker et al. 2007, 2012). A workflow will be developed enabling interoperability of the different types of data, information and knowledge as required in WP2-4. RBINS has standardized a majority of the data following European guidelines (e.g. EU-FP7 Geo-Seas for geological and geophysical data; EU-FP7 SeaDataNet for oceanographic data). This process will continue, further anticipating on the provision of data to European geological data portals (e.g. EMODNet-Geology, EU Infrastructure project EGDI-Scope). An inventory of stakeholder needs will be based on the outcome of proof-of-concept workshops, on feedback from the follow-up committee and on existing recent socio-economical analyses (Belgische Staat 2012c).
